- Welcome to the New Tree413
If you've followed Tree413 over the years, you've known us as a tree service. Today, we're excited to welcome you to the next chapter. After more than 30 years as a licensed general contractor, business owner, and professional in the construction and outdoor service industries, I've come to realize that one of the biggest challenges homeowners face isn't the project itself—it's knowing who to hire. Throughout my career, I've been asked the same question thousands of times. "Who would you use?" Whether it was a roofer, landscaper, fence company, excavation contractor, patio installer, irrigation company, tree service, or another trade, people were always looking for someone they could trust to point them in the right direction. Those conversations never really stopped. In fact, they've become even more common. As the years have gone by, more and more homeowners have reached out asking for recommendations, advice, or simply a second opinion before hiring someone. That made me realize something. People aren't just looking for a contractor. They're looking for someone they trust to help them find the right contractor. At the same time, I've watched something else that hasn't changed in more than three decades. The world has changed. Technology has changed. The way we communicate has changed. But the way most people hire contractors hasn't. Years ago, homeowners relied on friends, family, and neighbors for recommendations. Today, many simply ask thousands of strangers on social media. The problem is that most recommendations are just names. Rarely do they explain why someone is being recommended. Was the project similar to yours? Is the contractor experienced in that type of work? Are they properly insured? Do they have the right equipment? Do they regularly complete projects like yours? Will they stand behind their work? Those are the questions that matter. That's where Tree413 comes in. Tree413 has evolved into a resource dedicated to helping homeowners make informed decisions and connecting them with contractors we believe are the best fit for their specific project. When we recommend a contractor, we don't just think about who's available or who's well known. We consider the complete picture. Do they have the right experience? Are they properly licensed where required? Are they adequately insured? Do they have the equipment, knowledge, and resources to complete the work professionally? Have they consistently demonstrated quality workmanship? And just as importantly... What is their character? Over the years, I've learned that the best contractors aren't just highly skilled. They're honest. They communicate well. They stand behind their work. They treat customers fairly, respect their property, and take pride in doing things the right way. Those are the professionals we want homeowners to find. Our mission is simple: To help homeowners hire with confidence while recognizing contractors who have earned that trust through experience, professionalism, quality workmanship, and integrity. If you're planning an outdoor project and aren't sure where to start, we'd love to help. Our Tree413 Referral Service is completely free. Tell us about your project, and we'll recommend a contractor we believe is the best fit for your needs based on decades of industry experience and thoughtful evaluation—not just a list of names. Visit tree413.com to request your free contractor recommendation, explore our homeowner resources, or simply reach out with a question. Thank you for being part of the Tree413 journey. We're excited about this next chapter, and we look forward to helping homeowners make better decisions while recognizing the contractors who truly earn your trust. Welcome to the new Tree413.
- A Beautiful Patio Isn't Always a Well-Built Patio
One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is believing they can judge the quality of a project by how it looks on the day it's completed. The truth is, some of the most important parts of a project are the parts you'll never see. Take a paver patio, for example. When the last paver is installed, the joints are filled, and everything is cleaned up, two patios can look nearly identical. The homeowner is happy, the contractor gets paid, and everything appears perfect. But what happens six months, a year, or even several years later? If the base wasn't excavated to the proper depth, the wrong materials were used, the soil wasn't properly compacted, drainage wasn't considered, or the installation methods weren't appropriate for the site conditions, that beautiful patio may begin to settle, shift, separate, or heave. What looked like a great deal can quickly become an expensive problem. That's why experience matters. Building a patio isn't just about laying pavers—it's about understanding excavation, base preparation, compaction, drainage, soil conditions, grading, and the proper materials for each project. Those are the details that determine whether a patio lasts for decades or begins failing after the first few seasons. When hiring a contractor, ask how many similar projects they've completed. Ask to see examples of their work. If certifications or manufacturer training are available for that type of installation, ask about those as well. One of the best questions you can ask is: "Can you provide references from customers whose patios were installed five or more years ago?" Anyone can show you a project that looked beautiful the day it was finished. A project that's still performing well five or ten years later tells you much more about the quality of the workmanship. Unfortunately, when a patio fails, homeowners often end up paying far more than they expected. First, they pay to have the patio installed. Then they pay another contractor to remove and dispose of the failed project. Finally, they pay to have the patio rebuilt correctly. In some cases, additional materials are needed because existing pavers become damaged during removal, additional cuts are required, or matching materials are no longer available. If the original product has been discontinued, portions—or even the entire patio—may need to be replaced with new materials to achieve a consistent appearance. What originally seemed like the "cheaper" option can easily become the most expensive one. That's why choosing a contractor based on price alone can be risky. The best value is often the contractor who has the experience, knowledge, and proven track record to build the project correctly the first time. Finally, don't forget to ask about warranties. A contractor should clearly explain what is covered, how long the warranty lasts, and how warranty issues are handled. A warranty doesn't replace quality workmanship, but when combined with experience, proper installation methods, and appropriate insurance, it provides another layer of confidence that you're making a sound investment. Remember, the most important part of many projects is often the part you'll never see.
- Why We Created the Tree413 Advisor
After more than 30 years in the construction, landscaping, and tree care industries, I've noticed something that has never really changed. Most homeowners hire contractors the same way they did decades ago. They ask a neighbor who they used. They post on social media looking for recommendations. They collect a few estimates and often choose the lowest price. Sometimes they read a handful of online reviews and assume they've done enough research. Unfortunately, that's where many costly mistakes begin. The truth is, most homeowners aren't making poor decisions because they don't care. They're making them because they're busy. Between work, family, appointments, and everyday responsibilities, few people have the time to thoroughly research every contractor they're considering. Calling previous customers takes time. Driving by completed projects takes time. Verifying insurance takes time. Understanding permits takes time. Comparing estimates takes time. Asking the right questions takes time. Unfortunately, those are often the very steps that separate a successful project from an expensive mistake. Another common misunderstanding is believing that because a friend, family member, or neighbor had a great experience with a contractor, that same contractor is automatically the right choice for your project. The reality is that no two projects are the same. A contractor may have done an outstanding job removing one tree, replacing a small roof, or installing a simple patio. That doesn't automatically mean they're the best choice for a larger, more technical, or more specialized project. Different jobs require different experience, equipment, crews, planning, and expertise. Hiring the right contractor isn't simply about finding a good contractor. It's about finding the right contractor for your specific project. That distinction is more important than many people realize. One recommendation, one five-star review, or one successful project doesn't tell the whole story. Whenever possible, talk with previous customers who had projects similar to yours. Ask about communication, professionalism, scheduling, cleanliness, and how the contractor handled unexpected challenges. If you have the opportunity, drive by completed projects and see the quality of the work for yourself. Most people don't skip these important steps because they don't care—they skip them because life gets busy. That's understandable. But those few extra hours spent doing your homework can save thousands of dollars and countless headaches later. There are many outstanding contractors who deserve recognition. They invest in proper insurance, continuing education, quality equipment, skilled employees, and professional business practices. Yet many of them lose projects simply because homeowners compare only the final price without understanding everything that goes into delivering quality work. That's unfortunate for both the homeowner and the contractor. This is exactly why Tree413 was created. After spending more than three decades in this industry, I realized homeowners didn't need more advertisements—they needed a trusted resource. They needed someone with real-world experience who could help them understand the hiring process, avoid common mistakes, and make confident decisions before investing their hard-earned money. Tree413 was built to bridge that gap. Our mission is to educate homeowners, provide experienced guidance, and connect them with contractors whose experience, professionalism, and qualifications are the right fit for their specific project. As we continue building Tree413, we'll spend time getting to know our contractor members. We'll learn about their businesses, understand their strengths, review completed projects whenever possible, and build relationships that allow us to make informed recommendations over time. We believe trust should be earned through professionalism, consistency, and proven results. The Tree413 Advisor is an extension of that mission. Here you'll find practical advice based on decades of real-world experience. We'll discuss hiring contractors, comparing estimates, understanding insurance, permits, project planning, seasonal maintenance, avoiding expensive mistakes, and much more. Whether you prefer to research contractors on your own or would rather have some guidance, Tree413 is here to help. If you enjoy doing your own research, we hope the Tree413 Advisor gives you the knowledge and confidence to make informed hiring decisions. If you don't have the time—or simply want an experienced second opinion—we're here for that too. As we get to know our contractor members and learn more about their experience, specialties, and completed work, we'll help connect homeowners with contractors who are well suited for their specific project. Our contractor recommendations are provided as a complimentary service because we believe every homeowner deserves access to knowledgeable guidance before making important decisions about their home. Our goal is simple: To save you time. To help you avoid costly mistakes. To give you confidence before you invest your hard-earned money. Sometimes that means giving you the knowledge to make your own decision. Other times, it means helping you identify qualified contractors who are a good fit for your project. Either way, Tree413 is here to be your trusted advisor. Because when homeowners are better informed, everyone benefits. Homeowners make smarter decisions, reputable contractors have the opportunity to stand out for the right reasons, and projects are far more likely to end successfully. Thank you for joining us. We hope the Tree413 Advisor becomes a trusted resource you return to whenever you're planning your next outdoor project. Joseph's Advice After more than 30 years in this industry, one lesson has stood out above all the others: choosing the right contractor isn't always about finding the lowest price—it's about finding the right fit for the job. Many homeowners don't realize that hiring the wrong type of contractor can actually cost them more. A large company may have minimum charges that make small jobs unnecessarily expensive. A contractor with specialized equipment and overhead may not be the most economical choice for routine work. On the other hand, some projects require specialized experience, equipment, or insurance, and hiring someone who isn't properly qualified can become far more expensive in the long run. Every project is different, and that's exactly why there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. That's one of the reasons I created Tree413. I wanted homeowners to have a place where they could learn from someone who's spent decades in these industries and, when they need it, receive guidance at no cost. Sometimes the best advice is simply helping someone understand which type of contractor they should be calling in the first place. I also want to recognize the contractors who do things the right way—those who invest in proper insurance, continue improving their skills, operate professionally, and genuinely care about their customers. They deserve the opportunity to be recognized for the value they provide, not overlooked simply because someone else submitted a lower price. Whether you use Tree413 to educate yourself or ask us for guidance, I hope we can save you time, help you avoid costly mistakes, and give you confidence before you invest in your home. Thank you for reading, and I hope you'll join me for the next Tree413 Advisor article. Joseph P. Alexopoulos Founder, Tree413
